Sister Kayane Taslakian

Sister Kayane Taslakian
Sister Kayane Taslakian has been part of the Armenian Sisters order for over six decades. She started her teaching career in 1963 at the Armenian Sisters’ Academy in Damascus, Syria where she taught Armenian and religion to elementary aged students. When her assignment was over in Damascus, she moved to Amman, Jordan where she continued to teach at the ASA there. As a result of the war, and after three years in Jordan, she moved to Baghdad, Iraq where she remained for 25 years teaching Armenian and religion at the ASA location there. When the need for a religion teacher arose in the Los Angeles location of ASA, Sister Kayane once again moved, and has remained at ASA Montrose since 1996. Currently, she teaches religion to the preschool students, kindergarteners, and first thru third graders. Sister Kayane is originally from Lebanon and received her education in early childhood development and pre-elementary schooling in Rome, Italy.

Gerardo Arteaga

Gerardo Arteaga
Mr. Gerardo Arteaga began teaching science to 5th-8th graders at ASA during the 2017-2018 school year. He received his Bachelor of Arts in public health and studied premedical sciences at Brown University. He has taught nutrition and healthy living classes at middle schools and high schools as a former college student at Brown and as a former Community Education Specialist with the University of California. He is very passionate about health sciences and education, believing that every child deserves access to a challenging, experiential learning environment. He is currently studying for his entrance exams for medical school to continue his education. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening, cooking, reading, traveling, working out, and playing tennis with his friends and family.

Varduhi Bagdasarian

Varduhi Bagdasarian
Music Teacher
Mrs. Varduhi Bagdasarian has been the music teacher at ASA since 2005. She is also a private piano teacher and a member of the California Music Teachers’ Association since 1997. She holds a number of certificates and degrees as a conductor, pianist and theorist from the Federal Conservatoire of Komitas, Musical College of Romanos Melikian and the Music School of Armen Tigranian. In the past, she was a music teacher at Narek School and a gold medal winner as Best Conductor at the Golden State Festival in San Francisco, CA in 1995.

Kathy Kazazian

Kathy Kazazian
Mrs. Kathy Kazazian has been teaching Spanish for 2nd - 8th graders at ASA since 2001. She graduated from E.L.A.D.I., Chile, with a B.A in Translation and Interpretation in English-Spanish-French. While working at ASA, she also taught Spanish to high school students, as well as in private language institutes. She enjoys watching basketball, tennis, and especially the beautiful game of soccer. Mrs. Kathy likes traveling and taking long walks with her dog, but most importantly, she loves spending time with her family.

Zvart Hamamjyan

Zvart Hamamjyan
Ms. Zvart Hamamjyan was born in Syria Aleppo and raised in Armenia. She is a graduate of Erevan State University, and took up education as a career after majoring in Oriental Studies. She completed her B.A. in 2013 and is currently working on her teaching credential. She has been at ASA since 2015, and is currently the kindergarten Armenian teacher. At the end of every day, she loves reading books or drawing. As Dr. Seuss said, “You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.”

Mary Kouyoumdjian

Mary Kouyoumdjian
Mrs. Mary Kouyoumdjian is the Armenian and Armenian History teacher for third, fourth and fifth grades. She have been teaching for 50 years. For 27 years, she was the kindergarten director for AGBU in Lebanon, and has been at ASA for 23 years. She holds a Bachelor's degree from Lebanon in Armenian language and Child Development. She loves to sing, dance, cook, knit, and spend time with her family.

Tamar Handian

Tamar Handian
Mrs. Tamar Handian has been at ASA since 2015 and is currently the Kindergarten teacher. She graduated Beaver College (now Arcadia University) in Glenside, PA in 2000 with a Bachelor's degree and is currently continuing her education in teaching. Some of her hobbies include reading and spending time with her family enjoying outdoor activities, like camping and fishing. She loves teaching, especially kindergarten, and looks forward to many more years of teaching at ASA!

Clifton Wilder Koons

Clifton Wilder Koons
Mr. Clifton Wilder Koons II began teaching at ASA in the 2017-2018 school year. He is currently the fifth and sixth grade English and social studies teacher. Previously, he taught a range of students from elementary to high school, and even graduate school. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, with a focus on Creative Writing from Webster University, where he graduated magna cum laude and was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society Circle. He also has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Western State Colorado University, where he graduated with a 4.0 GPA. He also studied British literature, theater, musicals, and performance art overseas in London, England at Regent’s University London. During his free time, he works as a screenwriter. So far he’s done written work for Lionsgate, the movie studio known for such blockbuster films as The Hunger Games and Twilight, had his original stage play, Buh, Bye Rupert, produced at the Winnie Moore Auditorium, received high placement in various writing contests, such as the prestigious Austin Film Festival Screenwriting Competition, and published a number of poems in a variety of literary magazines.

Linda Keleshian Kandilian

Linda Keleshian Kandilian
Mrs. Linda Keleshian Kandilian has been teaching at ASA since 2002. During her first two years at ASA, she taught mathematics to third and fourth graders. Thereafter, she started to teach Armenian and Armenian History to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students, and continues to do so currently. Additionally, she serves as the head of the Armenian Department, is a member of the yearbook committee, a board member of the local Armenian Relief Society (ARS) Saturday School Regents, and frequently reports on school activities to the local Armenian newsletters. Mrs. Kandilian received her Bachelor’s degree in Economics at the University of Aleppo, in Syria, and completed a certificate program in Armenian literature at Mekhitarist Fathers’ school. Early in her career, Mrs. Kandilian taught mathematics and Armenian at multiple local Armenian elementary schools in Aleppo. Upon marrying and having three children, she chose to cease teaching and dedicated her time to the betterment of the local Armenian community in Aleppo. As a dedicated executive member of the local ARS, she concentrated her efforts on optimizing the operations of the local orphanage and the free community health clinic while serving on multiple other local, regional and national ARS committees. Additionally, Mrs. Linda spent eight years as a member of the local Armenian church social service committee in Aleppo and counseling those with marital and/or financial problems. Mrs. Linda’s hobbies include knitting, cooking and creative writing.

Christine Ohanes Mansouri

Mrs. Christine Ohanes Mansouri, is the IT Manager and computer teacher at ASA. She graduated from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering. From a young age, she knew she wanted to be a teacher. She loved learning and wanted to spread her enthusiasm for education to children. She has ten years of teaching and tutoring experience in computer and mathematics, ranging from the first grade to college level students. In her spare time, she enjoys working out, cooking, baking and solving challenging mathematical questions!

Antoine Bezdjian

Antoine Bezdjian
Mr. Antoine Bezdjian has been at ASA since 2004 teaching religion, and is also the yearbook advisor. He has been in education and teaching since 1992. He started in Beirut, Lebanon, where he taught religion and was an Administrative Assistant. He also studied Catechism in Seminary of Bzommar in Beirut. Currently, he is a sub-deacon at St. Gregory Armenian Catholic Church. Due to his interest in the eye, Mr. Antoine also acquired his Optical Dispensing diploma from American Career College in 2011. He is also a singer, performing at various Armenian events. In his spare time, Mr. Antoine likes to travel and shop.

Lernik Melkon

Lernik Melkon
Mrs. Lernik Melkon has been working at ASA since 2005. She started as a Pre-Kindergarten teacher, and moved on to Kindergarten and later the second grade. She taught until she went on hiatus after giving birth to her children. As of 2016, she resumed her post, returning back to ASA as the fourth grade homeroom teacher. Mrs. Lernik has a Bachelor's Degree in Human Services and a Master’s Degree in Marriage Child and Family Therapy from The University of Phoenix. She enjoys working with children, reading about human nature, and listening to music.

Garen Santikian

Garen Santikian
Math Teacher
Mr. Garen Santikian has been the mathematics teacher at ASA for 5th-8th grades since 2016 and previously taught 11th and 12th grades at Ferrahian High School. He has done private tutoring in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus since 1998 and also managed The Tutoring Club in La Crescenta from 2005-2012. He has a B.A. in Humanities from CSU Northridge and is currently completing his Single-Subject Teaching Credential having passed all three levels of the CSET in mathematics. In his spare time, Mr. G writes, records, and performs music with his band, Eyes of Every (www.eyesofevery.net). He grew up listening to classic rock and loves Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. He is also very passionate about soccer and coaches the ASA team.  He is a long-time supporter of FC Barcelona and believes Lionel Messi is the greatest player to ever kick a ball.

Edmond Hambarsumian

Edmond Hambarsumian
Mr. Edmond Hambarsumian has been teaching English and social studies at ASA since 2003. Before teaching at ASA, he was the computer lab technician at Roosevelt Middle School for two and a half years. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at CSU Dominguez Hills, majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Contemporary Social Problems/American Literature. He loves reading youth fiction and adult nonfiction. But most importantly, he loves spending time with his wife and two daughters.

Arpi Yousif

Arpi Yousif
Mrs. Arpi Yousif has been teaching at ASA for 20 years. She started as a preschool teacher, and later taught kindergarten for ten years. Currently, she is the first grade homeroom teacher. Mrs. Arpi received her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services (teaching, social work, & academic counseling) from the University of Phoenix. Some of her hobbies are spending quality time with her friends and family, shopping, and laughing. She has a positive disposition and always tries to find the light side of a tough situation.

Nora Bouldoukian

Nora Bouldoukian
Mrs. Nora Bouldoukian has been teaching Armenian and Armenian History for 26 years, and has been an Armenian and Armenian History teacher at ASA for eleven years. She has completed Armenian Literature courses in Lebanon, in addition to Early Child Development, General Office Management & Receptionist Clerk degrees from Glendale Community College. Mrs. Nora enjoys dancing, cooking, reading and research. She loves to teach Armenian, making it fun and enjoyable for the students.

Janet Panossian

Janet Panossian
Mrs. Janet Panossian has been the Athletic Director and P.E. coach at ASA since 2007. She received her Bachelor’s in Economics and Business from Isfahan, Iran. She also holds a Level 1 Coaching Certificate from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), a Level 3 Refereeing Certificate from the San Fernando Valley, and a Level 2 Refereeing Certificate from Iran. From 2015-2016 she also refereed for high school basketball games in the San Fernando Valley region. She has also taught P.E. to a range of grade levels, including from elementary to middle to high school for 18 years in Iran, and has also taught P.E. for five years at university in Iran. Finally, she was a state coach and ref for over ten years, and also taught Level 3 Coaching in basketball for the state for about seven years, both of which were in Iran. Among a number of achievements, Coach Janet is also a member of Homenetmen’s Regional Athletic Council. In her spare time, she loves spending time with her family, especially her daughters. She also enjoys swimming and taking walks.

Garine Oksazian Krikorian

Garine Oksazian Krikorian
Mrs. Garine Oksazian Krikorian started teaching at the Los Angeles Unified School District as a first grade teacher and elementary substitute teacher from 2008-2011. She has been teaching at ASA since 2011; she initially taught Kindergarten and is currently the third grade homeroom teacher and the dance instructor for the after-school dance program. Mrs. Garine received her B.A. in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Physical Science from California State University of Northridge. She also holds a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from CSUN. Mrs. Garine is also a professional dancer and owns a dance studio with her father, Simon and Patil Dance Group. They specialize in Armenian and International Folk Dancing. Mrs. Garine loves spending time with her husband and daughter during her spare time. She loves traveling to different countries and enjoys outdoor activities, such as snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, and hiking.

Manuella Kossayan

Manuella Kossayan
Mrs. Manuella Kossayan has been teaching art for the 1st-8th grade at ASA since 2000. Previously, she taught science to the 5th and 6th grades until 2012. She received her B.S. in Interior Architecture and design at Academy of Beaux Art in Beirut, Lebanon, and also holds a Multiple Subject Credential from CSUN. She loves to read, paint, travel, the beach, nature, and to practice yoga.

Inga Pambukyan

Inga Pambukyan
Second Grade Homeroom
Mrs. Inga Pambukyan has been teaching at ASA for 20 years and is currently the second grade homeroom teacher. She graduated from Herbert Hoover High School and moved on to complete her B.A. in Education in 1998 from the American University of Hawaii. She also holds a certificate in Child Care from Glendale Community College. She enjoys spending quality time with her family, Pilates, reading, and shopping.
